{"id":10109,"date":"2022-10-07T14:24:31","date_gmt":"2022-10-07T12:24:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ingredients.saccosystem.com\/how-to-read-nutrition-labels-and-what-to-look-out-for\/"},"modified":"2023-12-07T12:58:11","modified_gmt":"2023-12-07T11:58:11","slug":"how-to-read-nutrition-labels-and-what-to-look-out-for","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ingredients.saccosystem.com\/en\/how-to-read-nutrition-labels-and-what-to-look-out-for\/","title":{"rendered":"How to read nutrition labels and what to look out for"},"content":{"rendered":"&#13;\n<p>When shopping for groceries, <strong>consciously choosing products<\/strong> is most important, because it is the first step in creating tasty, healthy and balanced dishes, thus ensuring the well-being of our bodies. <strong> Nutrition labels <\/strong>placed on foods allow us to <strong>know what product <\/strong>we are buying, what <strong>ingredients it is made of<\/strong>, <strong>where <\/strong>it was produced, and more.<\/p>&#13;\n&#13;\n<p>This is therefore why it is important to <strong>read labels<\/strong> and know<strong> how to do so<\/strong> for truly quality shopping.<\/p>&#13;\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 50px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n&#13;\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What information do nutrition labels contain?<\/h2>&#13;\n&#13;\n<p>According to Italian law, in the<strong>label of a product <\/strong>, the manufacturer must specify a <strong>range of information<\/strong>:<\/p>&#13;\n&#13;\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">&#13;\n<li>food name;<\/li>&#13;\n<li>ingredient list;<\/li>&#13;\n<li>Presence of allergens;<\/li>&#13;\n<li>quantities of certain ingredients or categories of ingredients;<\/li>&#13;\n<li>Net quantity of the food;<\/li>&#13;\n<li>minimum shelf life or expiration date;<\/li>&#13;\n<li>special storage conditions and\/or the conditions of use;<\/li>&#13;\n<li>Name or company name and address of the operator who was responsible for marketing the product;<\/li>&#13;\n<li>Country of origin and place of origin of the product;<\/li>&#13;\n<li>instructions for use, for cases where their omission would make it difficult to use the food properly;<\/li>&#13;\n<li>for beverages containing more than 1.2 percent alcohol by volume, the actual alcoholic strength by volume;<\/li>&#13;\n<li>Nutrition statement on energy value, fat, saturated fatty acids, carbohydrates, sugars, protein, and salt.<\/li>&#13;\n<\/ul>&#13;\n&#13;\n<p>To prove that their product is of quality, companies invest in transparency because <strong>the more indications you have on the food label, the more certain you are of making an informed choice<\/strong>.<\/p>&#13;\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 50px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n&#13;\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to choose a quality food product?<\/h2>&#13;\n&#13;\n<p>When you have to pay attention to the <strong>nutrition declaration of a food<\/strong>, it is important to check on these aspects contained within the<strong>food label<\/strong>:<\/p>&#13;\n&#13;\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">&#13;\n<li><strong>saturated fats<\/strong> increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, so it is advisable to prefer foods that have a low amount of them. Their total daily intake should not exceed 7-10% of our energy needs. As a rule of thumb, ideally they should be less than one-third of the total fat in the food being considered;<\/li>&#13;\n<li><strong>daily salt intake<\/strong> should not exceed 5 grams per day, so again foods too high in salt should be avoided or consumed in a very park way;<\/li>&#13;\n<li>the same goes for products that are high in <strong>sugar<\/strong>, they should be limited, the guidelines indicate a maximum consumption of 25 g per day of sugar.<\/li>&#13;\n<\/ul>&#13;\n&#13;\n<p>It is also advisable to avoid for one&#8217;s health foods containing:<\/p>&#13;\n&#13;\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">&#13;\n<li>nitrites and nitrates;<\/li>&#13;\n<li>Sulfites and sulfur dioxide;<\/li>&#13;\n<li>monosodium glutamate;<\/li>&#13;\n<li>Palm and canola oils;<\/li>&#13;\n<li>Trans and hydrogenated fats.<\/li>&#13;\n<\/ul>&#13;\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 50px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n&#13;\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Storage and use conditions to avoid food waste<\/h2>&#13;\n&#13;\n<p>Two other important pieces of information contained within food labels, in an effort to <strong>reduce food waste as much as possible<\/strong>, are the <strong>expiration date <\/strong>and the <strong>minimum shelf life<\/strong>:<\/p>&#13;\n&#13;\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">&#13;\n<li>&#8220;<strong>To be consumed by&#8230;&#8221;<\/strong>is the limit by which the product must be compulsorily consumed.
