The Chilean mainland lies on a long strip of land located between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes Mountains. Chile is located in a geologically unstable zone and is periodically affected by the effects of seismic and volcanic activities (55 active volcanoes). The capital, Santiago, is located in a valley surrounded by the Andes and the mountains of the Cordillera de la Costa. At the Plaza de Armas, the neoclassical cathedral and natural history museum stand among the palm trees that decorate the square.
